Pune RTO to begin crackdown on vehicles with out-of-state registration numbers
Pune’s Regional Transport Office (RTO) intends to launch a campaign against out-of-state vehicles that are using Pune’s roads without changing their license plates.
These vehicles might make up between 3% and 4% of all the vehicles in Pune. According to an official, the owners of these vehicles haven’t changed their registration numbers despite having lived in the city for a while. Authorities said that a drive to identify these vehicles would begin in early March because the same was costing Pune RTO money.
Speaking to Pune Pulse, Sanjiv Bhor, Deputy Commissioner, RTO Pune, said “The RTO is going to begin taking action on the vehicles which are not registered in Maharashtra & not changing their registration number plates to Maharashtra. This action goes on regularly but we are going to increase the gravity of it. Currently, determining the number of vehicles registered outside Maharashtra is difficult as such vehicle drivers, when stopped & interrogated, give several kinds of reasons like they have just come to Maharashtra, they have only come as tourists, they are going to quickly exit the state & many more. Proving these things is difficult. Still, we will try to do the same.”
Ground teams would be involved in sporadic vehicle inspections, according to officials. Following identification, these vehicles will be halted, document checks will be carried out, and the driver or owner will be questioned to find out if the car has been in Pune for a long time or if it has only been here recently, according to an RTO Pune official.
