Pune, August 27, 2025 – The Maharashtra Public Health Department has temporarily suspended the live liver transplant licence of Sahyadri Super Specialty Hospitals, Deccan, following the deaths of a patient and his wife, who served as the donor, shortly after a liver transplant procedure.

The incident involved 49-year-old Bapu Komkar, who underwent the transplant on August 15, with his 46-year-old wife Kamini Komkar donating a portion of her liver. Relatives of the deceased have alleged medical negligence and demanded a thorough investigation. Taking suo motu cognisance of the case, the health department has formed a high-level inquiry committee under the Human Organ Transplantation Act, 1994. The committee, led by Dr. Nitin Ambadekar, Director of Health Services, is expected to submit its findings within four weeks.
