Pune Sees Steady Jamun Supply After Shortage, Prices Likely To Drop Soon
Pune, May 4, 2026: Jamun, also known as black plum, is slowly becoming easier to find in markets across Pune after a period of low supply and high prices. Traders say that as fresh stock arrives, prices are expected to come down in the coming days.
At present, wholesale rates in the Gultekdi Market Yard are around ₹180 to ₹230 per kg. Retail prices, which had gone up to ₹300–₹500 per kg, may also reduce as supply improves.
Last week the prices remained high in Mohamadwadi at Rs 130 per 250 gms, keeping it out of reach for many consumers.
Poor Harvest Led To Price Rise
Traders say the main reason behind the high prices was a weak crop in the Konkan region, which is one of the key areas for jamun production. Unusual weather and changes in seasonal patterns affected the yield this year, similar to what was seen in the Alphonso mango season.
Last week the market received over 70–80 crates per day only. Each crate carries around 20 to 22 kg of fruit.
Now, the market is receiving close to 150 crates daily, which is almost double the earlier supply.
Supply Coming From Multiple Regions
While Konkan remains an important source, traders say jamun is also arriving from areas like Sawantwadi, Banda, and Kankavli. Some nearby regions around Pune have also started contributing to the supply.
High Demand Due To Health Benefits
Jamun continues to be in high demand, especially among people managing blood sugar levels. The fruit has a low glycemic index and is known for its antioxidant properties. It is also a good source of iron and is believed to support digestion and overall health.
With supply improving, buyers in Pune can expect better availability and slightly lower prices in the coming weeks.
