In a significant moment for Pune’s higher education landscape, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) and Symbiosis International University have earned prestigious spots in the QS World University Rankings 2026, making it to the list of the top 1000 universities in the world. These recognitions highlight Pune’s rising stature as a hub for academic excellence and global competitiveness.

According to the rankings published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) a renowned London-based global higher education analytics firm SPPU is placed at 566th, while Symbiosis International University has been ranked 696th. These improved standings come amid fierce competition, with over 1,500 institutions evaluated globally this year.

What makes this achievement more remarkable is that Pune’s academic institutions are climbing the global ladder despite facing challenges like a reduced faculty count. SPPU has managed to jump 75 places compared to its 2025 ranking, driven by enhancements in research output, global employability, and academic reputation. Among Indian public universities, SPPU now ranks 15th nationally, and within Maharashtra, it stands second only to IIT Bombay, claiming the top spot among state universities.

The city’s progress aligns with broader national trends. A total of 54 Indian universities made it to the 2026 rankings, with about 50% of them improving their positions. IIT Delhi emerged as the top-ranked Indian institution, climbing from 150th in 2025 to 123rd this year, and surpassing IIT Bombay, which slipped to 129th from last year’s 118th. Other notable performers include IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, and IISc Bangalore, which rounded out the top five Indian entries. The University of Delhi also showed strong improvement, maintaining its 328th global position after a dramatic leap of 79 spots in 2025.

The 2026 rankings introduced a new parameter: International Student Diversity (ISD), reflecting not just the ratio of international students, but also the range of nationalities represented. This indicator aims to assess how globally inclusive institutions truly are an area where Pune’s globally connected institutions are poised to excel further.

Dr. Suresh Gosavi, Vice Chancellor of SPPU, expressed optimism for the road ahead. He emphasized plans to improve the student-faculty ratio, expand international collaborations, and align the university’s academic and research goals with the National Education Policy (NEP). Initiatives such as dual degree programs and greater industry-academia partnerships are expected to further elevate the quality of education, research, and student outcomes.

Much of Pune’s recent academic success can be traced to the tangible growth in employment opportunities, entrepreneurial ventures, and global exposure for students. This dual impact qualitative and quantitative has reinforced the city’s reputation as a nurturing ground for tomorrow’s leaders.
