IMD says chilly nights to continue till Wednesday; marginal rise expected later this week

Pune woke up to another bitterly cold morning on Monday as temperatures dipped to 10°C, marking one of the season’s sharpest drops. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the cold spell will persist until Wednesday before minimum temperatures gradually increase later in the week.

The chill was felt unevenly across the city. The Pashan observatory recorded the lowest temperature at 10°C, while localities like Lohegaon, Magarpatta and Koregaon Park stayed relatively warmer at around 14°C. Chinchwad registered the highest minimum at 15.3°C. Monday’s reading came just a day after the mercury fell to 9.8°C — a steep four-degree plunge from Saturday’s minimum of 14.4°C.

This marks the first sub-10°C spell since November 15. After that point, temperatures had begun rising steadily, touching nearly 17°C by November 25 due to Cyclone Senyar’s influence over the Bay of Bengal, which had temporarily blocked cold northerly winds from reaching Maharashtra.

According to IMD scientists, Pune’s winter pattern is heavily dependent on wind direction. Northerly winds brought a strong wave of cold air into the state by mid-November, but the arrival of low-pressure systems in the Bay of Bengal strengthened warm easterly winds. With Cyclone Ditwah now cutting off those easterlies, cold north winds have once again taken over, triggering the current drop.

Experts also noted that broader seasonal factors, including La Niña, are contributing to the cooler-than-usual conditions across central India.

Day temperatures, meanwhile, have remained stable at around 28–29°C for more than a week, with IMD projections showing a slight rise to nearly 30°C by December 7. For today, the city is expected to record a minimum of around 13°C and a maximum near 29°C, with winds around 7.4 km/h making it feel slightly cooler.

While Pune braces for more cold mornings, Mumbai too has witnessed an unusual dip. The city marked its coldest November day in over a decade when temperatures fell to 15.7°C on November 30 — the lowest November reading since 2014.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for cold-wave conditions across several regions in central and north Madhya Maharashtra until December 2, advising residents to take precautions during early mornings and late evenings.
