Pune Shivers: Single-Digit Temperature at 8.7°C, Cooler Than Many Hill Stations
Pune experiences its first chilly single-digit morning of the season, with temperatures dipping below many northern cities, signaling the onset of winter.
Pune marked a significant seasonal milestone on Wednesday as the temperature in the National Defence Academy (NDA) area dropped to 8.7°C, registering the city’s first single-digit reading of this winter. This temperature was notably lower than those recorded in several northern cities, including Delhi’s Safdarjung (10.4°C), Gurugram (11.6°C), Amritsar (9.5°C), and Ludhiana (9.8°C). Dharamsala, at 9°C, and Katra, at 9.1°C, were also slightly warmer than Pune’s NDA area.
In Shivajinagar, the mercury dipped to 9.8°C, the first time since November 2022 that temperatures have fallen to single digits in the city. Winter’s presence is firmly felt in Pune, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that temperatures in certain areas could dip as low as 8°C in the coming days.

Notable Drop in Daytime and Night Temperatures
Daytime temperatures in Pune have also witnessed a noticeable drop. On November 26, Shivajinagar recorded a maximum of 28°C, while the NDA area registered 27.7°C. These figures were comparable to the maximums recorded in northern cities like Delhi’s Safdarjung (26.7°C), Amritsar (25.8°C), and Gurugram (27.6°C).
IMD data also highlighted significant drops on recent days:
• November 25: Maximum temperature fell to 28.4°C, 1.5°C below normal.
• November 26: Minimum temperatures hovered around 10°C, with expectations of further drops to 8°C in coming days.
IMD meteorologist S.D. Sanap attributes this cold spell to several meteorological factors, including moisture depletion and cold northern winds. He explained that dry weather and reduced moisture levels have facilitated the drop in minimum temperatures.
“The cold and dry northerly winds from colder northern regions are significantly impacting Maharashtra’s weather patterns,” said Sanap. The trend is expected to persist for the next five days, with clear skies and calm nights allowing for greater heat loss into the atmosphere.
While Pune continues to experience cold mornings, experts predict a rise in minimum temperatures beginning Friday due to a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal. This weather system is expected to move toward the Tamil Nadu coast, bringing moisture-laden easterlies into Maharashtra, which will likely raise temperatures and end the cold spell temporarily.
The IMD also noted that the latter half of November this year has been 3.4°C cooler on average than the same period last year. However, early December may see warmer conditions as cloudy skies return with the influx of moisture.
Residents have been quick to notice the cooler mornings. “Stepping out in the morning feels like being in a hill station. I distinctly remember November 2023 being much warmer,” shared a local resident.
Pune’s weather has long been appreciated for its mild winters, but with such fluctuations in both minimum and maximum temperatures, locals are now preparing for further shifts as the season progresses.
