Pune: Sinhagad Road Metro Work to Cut Through Flyover at 66 Spots; Width to Shrink, Traffic Impact Likely
Pune–Solapur Highway: State Govt Approves Extension of 39 km Bhairobanala–Yavat Flyover to Ease Traffic
Pune, December 2, 2025: Metro construction on Sinhagad Road will require cutting the existing flyover at 66 locations, resulting in a reduction of its width by nearly two metres on each side. The provision for metro pillars had already been included during the flyover’s construction, the municipal corporation has clarified. However, citizens are expected to face some inconvenience during the work phase.
The central government recently approved the 32-km new metro corridor from Khadakwasla to Hadapsar–Kharadi and Nal Stop to Manikbag, with an estimated budget of ₹9,858 crore. To ease growing congestion on Sinhagad Road, the municipal corporation earlier built the flyover at a cost of ₹118 crore. While the flyover has helped reduce traffic issues, questions have emerged about whether portions of it will now be cut or modified for the metro alignment.
Currently, each side of the flyover is 7.324 metres wide. After metro pillars are erected through the cut sections, this width will reduce to 6.324 metres, meaning a one-metre reduction on either side. Officials stated that the flyover width had been intentionally designed to be wider, considering future metro requirements.
MahaMetro–PMC Coordination
MahaMetro prepared the DPR for the Khadakwasla–Kharadi metro route around the same time the flyover construction began. Both agencies coordinated on the design, including finalising the alignment. The ramp portion of the flyover was identified as requiring cuts for 39 pillars. Although the municipal corporation has already spent on the initial work, the cost will be recovered from future project allocations.
On Sinhagad Road, markings have already been placed indicating where the flyover will be cut to erect the metro pillars. For the elevated metro line, a pillar will be installed every 30 metres, and work on 39 pillars has already been completed.
