Pune: Speed Limit Slashed to 30 kmph; Ring Road DPR Fast-Tracked After Deadly Navale Bridge Accident
Pune, November 17, 2025: In response to the horrific accident near Pune’s Navale Bridge that left eight dead and 15 injured, authorities have announced a series of urgent safety measures — including reducing the speed limit on the accident-prone stretch to 30 kmph and fast-tracking the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Jambhulwadi–Warje ring road.
These decisions were finalized during a high-level review meeting chaired by Union minister of state for civil aviation and transport Murlidhar Mohol at the VVIP guest house on Saturday.
Key Decisions Following the Fatal Truck Collision
The measures come just two days after a container truck travelling from Satara to Mumbai reportedly lost control and crashed into more than 20 vehicles on the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway, triggering a chain collision.
Mohol said the Jambhulwadi–Warje ring road DPR, currently being prepared by PMRDA, must be expedited. He also noted that the DPR for the elevated corridor is complete and will soon be placed before the state cabinet for approval.
Officials Present at the Review Meeting
The meeting saw participation from MLA Bhimrao Tapkir, Divisional commissioner Chandrakant Pulkundwar, Police commissioner Amitesh Kumar, Pune municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, PMRDA commissioner Yogesh Mhase and Senior officials from NHAI, PWD, PMPML, and RTO
Speed Control and Enforcement Measures
Mohol directed several immediate interventions to prevent recurring accidents on the Navale Bridge stretch:
- Speed limit reduced from 60 kmph to 30 kmph
- Speed guns increased from three to six
- Strict monitoring to ensure compliance
- Heavy vehicle checks at Khed-Shivapur toll plaza for overloading, brake issues, and technical faults
- Violators to be penalised at the next toll gate
“High speed is among the major reasons for accidents in this stretch. Strict monitoring is essential to ensure the new norms are not violated,” Mohol said.
Infrastructure Upgrades and Safety Improvements
The administration has also moved to improve road safety through:
- Speeding up work on service roads and underpasses between Jambhulwadi and Ravet
- Accelerating land acquisition for pending projects
- Increasing reflectors along the highway
- Creating dedicated PMPML bus bays to avoid roadside crowding
- Removal of encroachments along service roads
- Convening a district road safety committee meeting to finalise short- and long-term solutions
Implementation Already Underway
Police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said traffic and crowd-control measures have already been initiated. Municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram confirmed intensified drives to clear encroachments and speed up service road work. PMRDA commissioner Yogesh Mhase said the ring road DPR will be prioritised.
Police also presented a detailed PPT outlining further interventions needed to reduce accidents near the Navale Bridge.
A follow-up review of the implementation will be held in December.
