Pune: A major controversy has erupted in the Kothrud area after eight people — including six serving police personnel — were booked for allegedly abducting, assaulting and subjecting three women to caste-based and sexually offensive abuse. The FIR was registered only after a local sessions court directed police earlier this week to file the complaint without delay.

According to the complaint lodged on Saturday evening, the case stems from an incident in August 2025. A woman from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, who had reportedly fled her in-laws due to harassment, had been living in a rented flat in Kothrud. When she could not be traced, her in-laws filed a missing person report, prompting police teams from Sambhajinagar and Kothrud to locate her at the apartment — a development that triggered the subsequent allegations.

One of the three women later approached the sessions court on August 20 through advocate Arvind Tayade, stating that Kothrud police had refused to register her complaint against the officers involved. The plea was filed under Section 175(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Acting on the application, the court ordered Kothrud police to immediately register the FIR and asked that the investigation be overseen by an officer not below the rank of assistant commissioner.

The women have alleged that they were threatened, assaulted and subjected to casteist insults and degrading remarks during questioning, despite having no criminal role in the matter.

Confirming the development, DCP Sambhaji Kadam said, “The FIR has been registered as per the court’s instructions, and the inquiry has been handed over to ACP Bhausaheb Pandhare of the Kothrud division.”

Those named in the FIR include API Amol Kamthe, constables Vinod Pardesi and Sanjeevani Shinde, and cyber cell officer Dhananjay Sanap from Satara police station in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. It also lists Kothrud police API Prema Patil, constable Shruti Kadne, retired officer Sakharam Sanap and one unidentified woman.

The case, now under higher-level supervision, has sparked renewed debate over police accountability and conduct.
