Pune: Suncity–Karvenagar Bridge To Open Before Monsoon, Set To Ease Traffic On Sinhagad Road Corridor
Pune | March 4, 2026
The long-pending bridge linking Suncity in Anandnagar with Karvenagar across the Mutha River is expected to open for public use by May 26, offering major relief to commuters travelling on the busy Sinhagad Road stretch.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has set a pre-monsoon deadline to complete all remaining work and make the bridge fully operational.
Key Traffic Relief Project
Construction of the bridge began in September 2023 and the project has been planned as a crucial connectivity link between Sinhagad Road, Karvenagar, Kothrud, Satara Road and Katraj. For more than two years, commuters in these areas have faced heavy congestion, particularly around Rajaram Bridge and adjoining road sections.
Once opened, the new bridge is expected to significantly reduce traffic pressure on Sinhagad Road and provide a faster alternative route between western Pune and the city’s southern corridors.
Inspection and Progress Review
During a recent site visit, Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure and PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram reviewed the progress of the project and directed officials to prioritise completion before the monsoon season.
Senior civic officials, including City Engineer Aniruddha Pawaskar, along with heads of the special projects and road departments, were also present during the inspection.
Construction Status
According to PMC officials:
- Structural work on the Karvenagar side, including pillars, girders and approach roads, is largely complete.
- Construction of pillars on the Suncity side is currently in progress.
- Road widening and removal of obstructions on the Suncity and Warje approach roads will be carried out before the bridge is opened to traffic.
Expected Impact
The Special Projects Department stated that the bridge will be completed before the onset of the monsoon. Once operational, it is expected to:
- Reduce congestion on Sinhagad Road and Rajaram Bridge
- Shorten travel time between Sinhagad Road and Kothrud
- Improve connectivity between western Pune and southern parts of the city
- Lower the risk of frequent traffic jams and accidents in the area
The project is likely to benefit thousands of daily commuters, including students, working professionals, traders and residents who regularly travel across this key urban corridor.
