Pune, June 25, 2025: Torrent Power Limited (TPL), a Gujarat-based private power company, has received a green signal from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to begin electricity distribution in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and parts of the surrounding district. This marks a major step toward privatization in the city’s power supply sector.

The company had applied for a parallel distribution license two and a half years ago to supply electricity in areas like Baramati, Indapur, Daund, Saswad, Ranjangaon, Chakan, Talegaon, and Kurkumbh. MERC has now invited public objections and suggestions on the matter until July 16 and will hold an e-hearing on July 22.

If the proposal is approved, Pune consumers could soon have the option to choose between state-run Mahavitaran and private player Torrent Power for their electricity needs—similar to the existing setup in Mumbai. This could lead to competitive tariffs and improved service quality for customers.

However, concerns have been raised about the financial impact on Mahavitaran, especially since Pune is among its highest-revenue regions. Critics argue that such decisions require careful policy considerations, particularly regarding electricity pricing, investment returns, and service obligations.

The move has revived long-dormant discussions about private electricity distribution in Pune and may significantly alter the region’s power supply landscape.
