Pune, December 29, 2025: In a strong push to enhance road safety during the festive period, the Pune City Traffic Police carried out a four-day special enforcement drive against drunk driving, booking as many as 242 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to an official press note issued by the Pune City Traffic Department on December 29, the special drive was conducted between December 25 and December 28, 2025. During this period, traffic police teams set up multiple checkpoints and nakabandi points across various parts of the city to check motorists and curb violations related to drunken driving.

Senior traffic officials said the initiative was undertaken keeping in mind the rise in social gatherings, celebrations and late-night travel during the Christmas and year-end season, which often leads to an increase in incidents of drunk driving. Special squads equipped with breath analysers were deployed at key junctions, arterial roads and accident-prone stretches to ensure effective enforcement.

During the operation, a total of 242 drivers were found driving vehicles after consuming alcohol. Legal action was initiated against all offenders under the relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. The violators were fined as per the law, and further legal procedures were followed in applicable cases.

Traffic police officials emphasised that drunk driving remains one of the leading causes of road accidents, often resulting in serious injuries and fatalities. “Driving under the influence not only puts the driver’s life at risk but also endangers pedestrians and other road users,” an official said.

The Pune City Traffic Department has appealed to citizens to act responsibly and strictly adhere to traffic rules. Motorists have been urged to avoid driving after consuming alcohol and to use alternative transport options such as cabs or designated drivers.

Officials added that similar enforcement drives will continue in the coming days as part of the department’s ongoing efforts to improve road safety and reduce accidents across Pune city.
