The city’s traffic police have intensified their efforts to tackle the issue of unpaid road offence fines by impounding vehicles associated with significant outstanding penalties. As part of this crackdown, 44 vehicles—both four-wheelers and two-wheelers—with 50 or more unpaid fines have already been seized.

City Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar revealed that there are currently 21 vehicles with over 100 pending traffic challans, while an additional 988 vehicles have between 50 and 99 outstanding fines. Kumar emphasized that vehicle owners will be tracked down to ensure payment of these fines. Failure to settle the dues will result in the impounding of their vehicles.

Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil stated that the total fines pending across these vehicles amount to Rs 3.18 crore. “Our staff across various traffic divisions have the list of these vehicles. We are committed to enforcing payment and will proceed with impounding vehicles that do not comply,” Patil added.

For four-wheelers with tourist or commercial number plates, any vehicle with more than 50 unpaid fines will be targeted. If the fines remain unpaid, their transport permits will be cancelled in coordination with the RTO. Private vehicles with over 50 unpaid fines will face similar consequences, with the potential suspension of the owner’s driving license.

Patil also disclosed that one two-wheeler currently holds the record for the highest number of unpaid traffic challans—154 in total, amounting to Rs 1.21 lakh in fines, which exceeds the vehicle’s cost. There are at least 35 such vehicles in the city with fines surpassing their value.

The police department’s crackdown aims to address the growing concern of unpaid traffic fines and ensure greater compliance with road safety regulations.
