Pune, April 23, 2026: In a major enforcement push, Pune Traffic Police have taken action against more than 6,000 abandoned and illegally parked vehicles over the past 10 days, aiming to reduce congestion and improve road safety across the city.

The drive was launched following a surge in complaints from residents about vehicles left unattended for long periods on busy streets, internal roads, and near commercial areas. Authorities noted that such vehicles not only occupy valuable space but also disrupt traffic flow and create safety risks.

Officials said the operation is being carried out in a systematic manner. Vehicles identified as abandoned or violating parking norms are first issued a notice. Owners are given a limited timeframe to respond and remove their vehicles before further action is taken.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Himmat Jadhav stated that if a vehicle remains unattended even after 24 hours of notice, it is classified as abandoned and removed. He emphasised that the objective of the drive is not just enforcement but ensuring that roads remain accessible and safe for all commuters.

In certain situations, depending on the vehicle’s condition or location, authorities may allow additional time ranging from 48 hours to up to a week. However, vehicles causing immediate obstruction or posing safety hazards are towed away without delay.

Once removed, the vehicles are shifted to designated yards, and penalties are imposed based on the type of violation. If owners fail to reclaim their vehicles despite repeated notices, the police initiate legal procedures to dispose of them through auction.

Traffic officials highlighted that abandoned vehicles often become dumping spots for garbage and may also be misused for unlawful activities. In residential areas, they frequently block access for emergency services, creating further challenges for residents.

The crackdown is being implemented across multiple parts of Pune, particularly in densely populated zones and areas facing persistent parking issues.

Authorities said the initiative is part of a broader strategy to promote discipline among motorists and ensure optimal use of limited road space. Citizens have been urged to cooperate by removing unused vehicles and following parking regulations. They are also encouraged to report abandoned vehicles through official channels.

Officials added that with the city’s growing population and increasing number of vehicles, similar drives will be conducted regularly to maintain smoother traffic movement and safer roads.
