20-year-old student succumbed to injuries after accident at Tolani Maritime Institute in Maval

A tragic incident unfolded in Pune’s Maval taluka where a 20-year-old student lost his life after an iron basketball pole collapsed on him while he was playing. The accident occurred on Sunday morning around 7 am at the Tolani Maritime Institute premises in Indori, located on the Talegaon-Chakan road.

The deceased has been identified as Vishal Verma, a resident of the institute’s student hostel. He originally hailed from Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh. According to police officials, a group of students was playing basketball on campus when the incident took place.

During the game, Vishal reportedly held onto the basketball ring. Suddenly, the ring broke, and within moments, the attached iron pole also came crashing down. The heavy structure fell directly onto him, causing severe injuries.

He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Talegaon Dabhade for treatment. Despite efforts by medical staff, Vishal succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

The sudden death has raised concerns over safety measures and maintenance of sports infrastructure within educational institutions. Authorities are expected to examine whether negligence or structural weakness led to the collapse.

Police have begun an investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause and any accountability in the matter.
