After experiencing the lowest water levels in history due to this year’s severe drought, Ujani Dam is witnessing a significant inflow of water thanks to heavy rains in Pune city and the dam area over the past two days. As of Friday morning, over 1.44 lakh cusecs of water have started entering the dam, which had been at a minus level for several days. The water level of Ujani Dam, a crucial resource for the Solapur, Pune, and Ahmednagar districts, is increasing rapidly. The dam needs an additional 1.45 TMC of water by 6 AM on Friday to move out of dead storage. Currently, the dam is discharging 1,44,149 cusecs of water from Daund, which is expected to transition the dam from dead stock to livestock soon.

The Ujani Dam, with a total capacity of 123 TMC, holds 63.66 TMC in dead storage and 53.34 TMC in live storage. Last year, the dam was 60.66% full. However, due to continuous water release ahead of elections, the water level dropped significantly, reaching a critical minus 60% level.

Since June 1, intermittent rains have contributed small amounts of water to the dam, but the recent heavy rains have dramatically accelerated the inflow. It is anticipated that by Friday afternoon, the dam will move past the zero level and begin filling with live stock.

As of 6 AM on July 26, 2024, the dam’s status is as follows:

Total water storage : 62.21 TMC

Live water storage: 1.26 TMC

Discharge from Daund: 1,44,149 cusecs

The recent inflow has brought much-needed relief to farmers and residents in the Pune, Solapur, and Ahmednagar districts, offering hope for better water availability in the coming days.
