Pune: Wanowrie Police Book Husband-Wife Duo For Illegal Sale Of Banned Gutkha; Material Worth ₹1.62 Lakh Seized
Pune, December 12, 2025: Wanowrie Police have registered a case against a husband and wife for selling banned gutkha and tobacco products in violation of government restrictions.
According to police, Assistant Police Inspector Umakant Mahadik and the detection team were patrolling the area when they received a tip-off from an informant. The information stated that at a house near Baramati Chicken Agro Shop lane, Ramnagar, near Chhoti Masjid, Ramtekdi, Hadapsar, Pune, a man named Gulfam Ansari and his wife Nurzahan Gulfam Ansari were illegally selling various brands of gutkha and paan masala. Despite knowing that these tobacco-laced products are banned by the government due to serious health hazards—including oral cancer and other illnesses—the couple continued their business.
Acting on the tip, the police team reached the location and confirmed that the couple was indeed selling prohibited tobacco products. A search of the premises resulted in the seizure of banned gutkha and paan masala worth ₹1,62,184.
Following the seizure, a case was registered at Wanowrie Police Station against Gulfam Ansari (45), resident of Ramnagar, Ramtekdi, Hadapsar andNurzahan Gulfam Ansari (40), resident of the same address
They have been booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 123, 223, 274, 275, Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) Sections 7(2) & 20(2) and Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 Section 26(2)(i)(iv) and penal Section 59.
The action was carried out under the guidance of Manoj Patil, Additional Commissioner of Police, East Region, Rajlakshmi Shivankar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 5 and Namrata Desai, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Wanowrie Division.
The operation was executed by Wanowrie Police Station under Sr. PI Bhausaheb Patil and PI (Crime) Vijaykumar Doke.
The raid team included: API Umakant Mahadik, PSI Alfaz Shaikh, and police personnel Daya Shegar, Mahesh Gadhve, Amol Pilane, Ashish Kamble, Atul Gaikwad, Vishnu Sutar, Gopal Madane, Abhijit Chavan, Amol Gaikwad, Arshad Sayyed, Vitthal Chormal, Balaji Waghmare, and Woman Constable Chaitrali Yadav.
