A wildfire broke out in the Bhilarewadi forest area of Katraj Ghat on Sunday afternoon. The forest department officials managed to douse the fire in two hours with the help of locals. According to an official from the fire department, lighted cigarettes may have contributed to the incident.
The incident happened as one approaches Katraj from Khed-Shivapur by Katraj Old Ghat near a White Edge, close to the abandoned tunnel on the left. Dilip Gogawle, Forest Sevak Sambhaji Dhanave, and Forest Guard Sambhaji Gaikwad attempted to contain the fire.
Incidents of forest fires result in significant losses of animals and forest resources. However, numerous instances in the past have shown that forest management is not taking this seriously.
Incidents of forest fires happen often in Katraj Ghat during the summer months each year, and the forest department does not prepare any significant efforts to stop them. Environmentalists are also calling for the police to take harsh measures against the couples lounging in the ghat area along with those who smoke.
