Pune Woman Pays Rs 50,000 To Husband For Divorce; Unusual Family Court Case Sparks Debate
Inter-caste love marriage ended within months as family pressure forced the woman to seek separation in Pune
A rare divorce case from Pune’s Shivajinagar Family Court has drawn attention after a woman agreed to pay Rs 50,000 to her husband as legal expenses in order to secure a divorce.
The unusual case involved a young couple who had married against their families’ wishes but later separated due to intense pressure from relatives.
According to court proceedings, the couple, whose names have been changed to protect their identities, lived in the same neighbourhood and eventually fell in love. Facing strong opposition from their families due to caste differences, they eloped and registered their marriage under the Special Marriage Act on April 19, 2024.
After the marriage, however, both continued to live with their respective families in Pune instead of staying together.
Family Pressure Led To Divorce
A few days after the marriage, the woman informed her family about it. Her relatives reportedly strongly opposed the inter-caste relationship. Unable to withstand the pressure from her family, she filed a divorce petition in the family court.
During the court process, the husband expressed willingness to continue the marriage and reportedly wanted his wife to live with him. However, she refused to return.
The matter then moved to legal proceedings, and the husband initially avoided appearing in court on the first two hearing dates. Later, through his lawyer, he filed a petition in the court.
Counseling Failed To Reconcile Couple
In family court divorce cases, couples are typically sent for counselling in an attempt to resolve differences and restore the marriage. In this case, however, the counselling sessions did not lead to reconciliation.
After discussions between lawyers from both sides, the woman agreed to pay Rs 50,000 to the husband to cover litigation expenses.
Divorce Granted By Mutual Consent
Following this agreement, the couple obtained a mutual consent divorce in the Shivajinagar Family Court. Once the amount was paid, the court granted the divorce.
Legal representatives involved in the case noted that the husband had earlier been willing to continue the marriage but the woman refused to return, leading to the final settlement.
The case has sparked discussion because in most divorce cases, alimony is typically paid by the husband to the wife. Here, the roles were reversed, making it an unusual example in family court proceedings.
