Pune: Work On First Dedicated Heliport At Hadapsar Set To Begin By November
Pune, May 6, 2026: Construction of a modern heliport at the Hadapsar Gliding Centre is expected to commence this winter, marking a significant step toward strengthening aviation infrastructure in the city.
Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol stated that the process of transferring the land to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is nearing completion. He indicated that groundwork for the project is likely to begin by November.
The proposed heliport aims to offer dedicated facilities for helicopter operations in and around Pune, addressing the increasing volume of chopper traffic while improving overall safety and operational efficiency.

Spread across approximately 250 acres, the Hadapsar Gliding Centre was earlier managed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation until December 2024. It has since been leased to AAI for a period of 99 years, clearing the way for the heliport’s development. The project was initially announced in May last year.
Currently, Pune has an estimated fleet of 18 to 20 helicopters, including private and commercial operators. The city and its surrounding areas have around 10 permanent helipads and 30 to 35 temporary landing sites. Industry experts believe that a centralized heliport will streamline operations by providing a single, well-equipped hub for take-offs, landings, and coordination.
Aviation stakeholders have also pointed out that the Lohegaon Airport is frequently used for VIP helicopter movements. Shifting such operations to a dedicated heliport is expected to reduce congestion and ease pressure on airport activities.
Pilots and industry professionals have welcomed the initiative, noting that centralized management under a government body would enhance coordination and safety. With several helicopter-related incidents reported in the region in recent years, experts stress that the new facility—equipped with fuelling stations, hangars, lighting systems, and passenger amenities—will play a crucial role in improving aviation safety standards in Pune.
