Pune’s Chandni Chowk to Get 60-Foot Bronze Statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
Pune’s Chandni Chowk is set to get a grand makeover with a 60-foot tall bronze statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Initially, the plan was to install a 20-foot statue, but after demands from Shivaji devotees and a suggestion by Union Minister Muralidhar Mohol, the height was increased. The statue will now stand on a 30-foot high platform, replacing the earlier 17-foot plan.
The statue will use 23,760 kg of bronze and cost ₹7.6 crore. The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) standing committee has already approved the revised proposal. The project also includes a pathway made of yellow and red stones, a cement concrete wall, and a boundary wall. The remaining space will feature decorative plants and flowers, transforming the area into a garden. However, due to the statue’s proximity to the National Highway and its increased height, fresh permissions from the Ministry of Defence and other central government departments are required. Officials have assured that all safety norms will be met.
The site, located near the Chandni Chowk flyover, spans 5,542 square meters and is part of a larger plan to beautify the area and develop it as a tourist attraction. The original design included a stone-clad entrance, lotus-shaped fountains, and a 17-foot pedestal.
This project aims to honor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj while enhancing the area’s aesthetic appeal.
