Pune, August 3, 2024 – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rainfall in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the surrounding areas.

Heavy rainfall in Pune district has led to alarming water levels in several major reservoirs, including Khadakwasla, Pavana, Mulshi, Chaskaman, and Panshet. The reservoirs are now nearing their full capacities, with Panshet at nearly 95% capacity. The substantial discharge from these reservoirs, along with significant outflows from the Koyna Dam, has prompted urgent action from the authorities.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has issued directives for the immediate evacuation of residents living in flood-prone and low-lying areas, particularly those along the Krishna riverbank. The aim is to ensure public safety in light of the ongoing and expected heavy rainfall.

In a recent statement, Dr. Rajendra Bhosale from the Pune Municipal Corporation said, “I urge all citizens to be aware that Khadakwasla is currently nearly 90% full. A red alert has been issued, and according to the Irrigation Department’s notification, Khadakwasla is releasing 27,000 cubic meters per second, and Mulshi is releasing around 30,000 cubic meters per second. Given this situation, there is a significant risk of water entering areas such as Sinhagad Road, Sangamwadi, Harris Bridge, Dandekar Bridge, Vishrantwadi, Balewadi, and Baner. This discharge notice should be taken seriously to prevent any potential loss of life or property. In response to the emergency, municipal teams have been deployed to monitor and address waterlogging in vulnerable areas.”
