Dr. Alkananda Vaidya, a medical officer with 90% disability, has been transferred from Pune’s Regional Mental Hospital in Yerwada to Saswad Rural Hospital, about 30-35 km from her home. This transfer has sparked outrage on social media, with many supporting her call for justice.

Dr. Vaidya, a single parent and a specialist in Gynecology and Obstetrics, believes the move violates government rules protecting the rights of specially abled employees. This isn’t her first struggle—back in 2015, she was transferred 100 km away from home, but after appealing to then-Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, she was reassigned to Pune. Now, she’s facing similar difficulties again, as her disability makes long commutes challenging.

The health department insists that the transfer follows standard procedures, including the rule that employees must be moved after three years. However, Dr. Vaidya’s case points to possible inconsistencies. An able-bodied doctor was recently transferred to her former workplace, just 500 meters from Yerwada Jail, while Dr. Vaidya faces a lengthy commute despite her disability.

She has written to the authorities, citing government regulations for specially abled employees, but her concerns have so far been met with little response. Staff within the health department have shown support for her, and social media messages are urging Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to intervene and help.
