Rain Fury Brings Gurugram To A Halt: 20 km Highway Jam Sparks Public Outrage

Gurugram, September 2, 2025: Heavy rainfall on Monday brought Gurugram to a standstill, paralysing traffic on the Delhi-Jaipur National Highway (NH-48) for several hours and triggering widespread criticism of civic authorities. The downpour, which began around 3 pm and lasted nearly four hours, left long stretches of the highway submerged, resulting in a massive traffic jam spanning almost 20 kilometres.

Commuters found themselves stranded for hours between Sirhaul toll plaza near the Delhi border and Kherki Daula toll plaza, with traffic moving at a snail’s pace late into the night. Narsinghpur and Khandsa were among the worst-hit areas, where both the highway and service lanes went under water, leaving several vehicles damaged or inoperable. Traffic police had to deploy cranes to tow over 25 stranded cars and two-wheelers from waist-deep water.

By 8 pm, Gurugram had recorded over 100 mm of rainfall, with intermittent showers continuing overnight. The severe waterlogging not only crippled highway movement but also caused flooding across multiple city sectors, worsening the evening rush-hour chaos. Similar scenes unfolded in Noida, where jams stretched for several kilometres near Sector 16A on the Greater Noida-bound carriageway.

Public Anger Over Civic Mismanagement

As visuals of submerged highways and stranded vehicles went viral, social media erupted with criticism of the Haryana government. Prominent author and entrepreneur Suhel Seth accused the state’s leadership of negligence, calling for accountability from former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and current CM Nayab Singh Saini. “Gurugram is done. Like you can’t imagine… The BJP needs serious introspection. They’ve been running this state for 11 years now. You can’t blame Nehru,” Seth posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Other netizens described the situation as “horrific,” with many ridiculing claims of modern infrastructure and wide roads. One user wrote, “Winning the title for Most Congested Country. Slow claps for officials and citizens alike.”
