Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh – In a rare and awe-inspiring wildlife encounter, a group of travellers witnessed a snow leopard strolling along a mountain road near Spiti Valley, capturing a moment that has since mesmerized social media users across India.

The sighting occurred on May 5, between 6 to 7 PM, as the group journeyed from Kaza to Nako. Approximately 8 to 10 kilometres past Tabo, they were startled to see the elusive predator walking calmly on the road ahead. The majestic creature appeared completely unbothered by the approaching vehicle, which followed at a cautious and respectful distance.

The entire encounter was recorded from inside the vehicle, and the footage soon went viral online. In the video, one of the travellers can be heard saying, “Woh bhaag rahi hai humse” (She is running away from us), while another cautions, “She will obviously run. Do not follow closely, otherwise she can break the window glass.”

Despite their excitement, the group ensured they did not disturb the snow leopard, allowing it to continue undeterred on its path along the rugged Spiti landscape. A text overlay on the clip read, “A rare encounter on the Spiti Valley Road.” The accompanying caption reflected their astonishment: “Truly a magical moment of our journey. These rare creatures are hardly ever seen, especially in May.”

Online Reactions: Awe And Concern

The video quickly garnered attention across platforms. Wildlife enthusiasts and casual viewers alike expressed their amazement. One user commented, “Spotting a snow leopard is incredibly rare — and from your car! That’s once in a lifetime.” Another added, “Wildlife photographers spend months hoping for a glimpse. You’re beyond lucky.”

Snow leopards are known as the “ghosts of the mountains” due to their elusive nature. Perfectly camouflaged against rocky terrain, they are rarely seen in the wild, especially during warmer months like May. This makes the sighting even more extraordinary.

However, the post also sparked debate. Several users raised concerns about sharing the specific location of such encounters, warning it could put the animal at risk from poachers. One commenter urged, “Don’t reveal such precise locations. Poachers monitor such posts. Let’s protect them.” Another wrote, “Stop the car engine next time. Silence and distance are the best way to respect wildlife.”

Nature’s Master of Disguise

Snow leopards, native to high-altitude mountain ranges across Central and South Asia, are well adapted to their harsh environments. Their dense, thick fur and unique spotted coats provide camouflage against rocky cliffs and snowfields, making them nearly invisible in their natural habitat.

This unforgettable glimpse into the wild served as a reminder of the fragile beauty of India’s high-altitude biodiversity. It also reignited calls for responsible wildlife tourism and digital restraint when sharing sensitive sightings.
