Pune: The research, which was published in the journal Nature Food this week, utilized a model to predict the potential impact of lifestyle modifications on an individual’s lifespan.

The study drew upon data from the UK Biobank, a comprehensive biomedical database and research tool that encompasses genetic and health information from 467,354 participants in the United Kingdom.

As per the information provided, individuals in their forties who transitioned from an unhealthy diet to a diet associated with longevity could potentially increase their life expectancy by approximately 10 years. This change was observed to have a greater impact on women, with an additional 10.8 years, compared to men who experienced an additional 10.4 years.

As per the information received, the transition from consuming an average diet, as opposed to one that is explicitly unhealthy, to adopting the longevity-associated diet is correlated with an increase in life expectancy. For women in their 40s, this change in diet was associated with a gain of 3.1 years in life expectancy, which slightly increased to 3.4 years for men. Similarly, individuals in their 70s who made the same dietary changes experienced an increase in life expectancy of approximately five years.

According to the authors, the longer the delay in initiating dietary improvements, the lower the gains in life expectancy. However, even for those who begin making dietary changes at the age of 70, the increase in life expectancy is approximately half of what is achieved by adults in their 40s.

According to a study conducted by the University of Bergen in Norway and the University of Glasgow in Scotland, the extent to which one adopts a healthy diet has a direct correlation with their life expectancy.

The study found that incorporating whole grains, nuts, and fruits into one’s diet had the greatest impact on increasing life expectancy, while sugar-sweetened beverages and processed meat were found to be closely linked to mortality.
