Restaurants Report Customers Using AI-Generated Images to Get Refunds
Artificial intelligence has transformed the way we live, offering incredible tools for creativity, productivity, and problem-solving. From generating art to simplifying everyday tasks, AI’s potential is truly amazing. But while most people use it for innovation, some are exploiting it in ways that harm others—like creating fake complaints to get free food from hardworking restaurants.
Nini’s Kitchen, a popular eatery, recently spoke out in a viral Instagram video about this growing problem. According to the restaurant, delivery apps often approve refund requests before the restaurants have a chance to verify them, leaving businesses unfairly penalized. One viewer reacted, saying, “I was today years old when I realised that refunds are not approved by restaurants. Who made that system?”
Nini’s Kitchen shared examples of AI-generated complaints, including a “fly” in a Biscoff cake and spilled raita with Hyderabadi biryani. On inspection, the fly looked unnaturally clean and perfectly perched on the cake with no crumbs disturbed—an obvious sign of AI manipulation. Using an AI image checker, the restaurant confirmed the photos were digitally altered. Still, the delivery apps initially treated these claims as genuine and issued refunds.
“This isn’t just about losing money,” the restaurant explained. “It’s about our hard work, reputation, and trust being questioned for no reason.” They called on food delivery platforms to take a few extra minutes to verify complaints. “If AI can create fake evidence in three seconds, platforms should spend five seconds to check it. Honest customers and restaurants deserve protection. Trust shouldn’t be so easy to fake.”
Protecting Honest Businesses
With AI tools becoming increasingly powerful and accessible, restaurants warn that such fraudulent complaints could rise if verification systems aren’t strengthened. A careful review process would help ensure that genuine complaints are handled properly and that hardworking restaurants aren’t unfairly punished.
