Pune is witnessing a concerning rise in Zika virus cases, with the number of infected individuals reaching 52. Among these, four suspected Zika-related deaths have been reported, prompting the Public Health Department to launch an investigation to determine the exact causes.

Recently, two more patients have succumbed to the virus in the Pune Municipal Corporation area. Posthumous tests confirmed Zika infection in both cases. The deceased include a 68-year-old man from Kothrud and a 78-year-old man from Baner. Earlier, two other senior citizens had died under suspicious circumstances, and their deaths are also under scrutiny. The state government committee is reviewing the reports to confirm the involvement of Zika virus.

The Kothrud patient, who passed away on July 22, exhibited symptoms of fever and vomiting. Blood samples taken on July 17 confirmed Zika infection on July 31. However, multiple organ failure and septic shock were noted as the primary causes of death. The patient had underlying conditions of high blood pressure and diabetes.

The Baner patient was admitted to AIIMS on July 21 and died on July 26 after showing symptoms of fever and weakness since July 19. His Zika positive status was confirmed on July 30, with respiratory failure, high blood pressure, and diabetes cited as contributing factors.

In response to the outbreak, the health administration is intensifying efforts to curb the spread of the virus. Three new cases were reported in Shivane and Ambegaon Budruk. Primary health centers in Khadakwasla, Sangrun, and Khed Shivapur have initiated a door-to-door patient search campaign. Family members and close contacts of the infected individuals are being screened to prevent further transmission. The Zilla Parishad health administration is on high alert to contain the outbreak.

Authorities urge residents to take preventive measures, including eliminating stagnant water sources where mosquitoes breed, and to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as fever, rash, joint pain, or red eyes appear. The situation remains under close observation as health officials strive to manage and mitigate the impact of the virus in Pune.
