Pune is witnessing a concerning rise in Zika virus infections, with the number of confirmed cases now reaching 19. This alarming increase includes a 61-year-old senior citizen from Hadapsar, who is currently receiving treatment in a private hospital after initially being admitted for gastroenteritis. The patient tested positive for Zika during the hospital stay, highlighting the virus’s potential risk to older adults.

The Zika virus, which has already affected 10 pregnant women in Pune, presents symptoms such as joint pain, headache, red eyes, vomiting, fever, red spots on the body, diarrhea, and general weakness. The Municipal Health Department has ramped up its efforts to combat the spread of the virus by initiating extensive testing and preventive measures, especially among pregnant women who are particularly vulnerable.

The majority of the Zika cases in Pune have been reported in the Erandwane area, with six patients confirmed. Other affected areas include Kothrud, where six cases have been reported; Shivaji Nagar and Kharadi, with three cases each; Dahanukar Colony with two cases; and Ambegaon and Yerawada, each reporting one case.

As the city grapples with this emerging health challenge, the Municipal Health Department is urging residents to remain vigilant, seek medical attention if symptoms arise, and take preventive measures to reduce mosquito breeding sites. The department is also ensuring that pregnant women undergo regular testing to safeguard their health and that of their unborn children.
