A brazen daylight robbery struck PNG Jewelers in Sunnyvale in the United States of America (USA) on June 13, involving nearly twenty individuals in a smash-and-grab operation. The incident occurred at the Hacienda Shopping Center on E. El Camino Real around 1:30 p.m. where suspects used tools to break into jewellery display cases, swiftly fleeing in multiple vehicles before police arrival.

Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) initiated pursuit of two suspect vehicles on northbound U.S. Highway 101. During the chase, stolen jewellery was discarded from one vehicle, which was later abandoned near Whipple Avenue in Redwood City. Five suspects fled into an industrial area, leading to their subsequent arrest near San Carlos.

The apprehended individuals, Tonga Latu, Tavake Esafe, Ofa Ahomana, Kilifi Leaaetoa, and Afuhia Lavakeiaho, face charges including armed robbery, felony evasion, and burglary. The stolen jewellery, valued items from PNG Jewelers’ extensive collection, has partly been recovered.

This incident marks the second targeted robbery of an Indian jewellery store in two weeks, following a similar event at Bhindi Jewelers in Newark. Such targeted crimes against Indian jewellery stores are on the rise in the U.S., coinciding with the expansion of major Indian brands in the country.

Saurabh Gadgil, Chairman & Managing Director, expressed gratitude for community support and confirmed the safety of all staff amid the incidents. “I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming care and concern you have shown us for what has transpired at our Sunnyvale, California store the day before yesterday.”

The series of robberies shows concerns within the Indian jewellery retail sector in the Bay Area. Despite these challenges, PNG Jewelers reaffirms its commitment to security and vows to reopen soon, supported by the unwavering solidarity of its patrons and community.

The authorities continue their investigation while ensuring justice prevails in these troubling times for local businesses and residents alike.
