Losing something valuable can shake anyone, but finding it returned by an honest stranger can restore your faith in people. For one Pune resident, a misplaced smartphone worth Rs 70,000 turned into an unforgettable lesson about integrity and simple living.

The incident unfolded on February 12 at around 8:30 pm in Keshav Nagar, Pune. The man, who later shared his experience on Reddit, had no idea that his Samsung S25 had slipped from his pocket while he was riding home. The realization struck moments later — and with it, what he described as “instant panic.”

Within minutes, he was retracing every stretch of the road he had just travelled. He scanned the streets carefully and requested strangers to lend him their phones so he could dial his own number. “That sinking feeling when you realise your Rs 70k phone might be gone is unreal,” he wrote, describing the anxiety of potentially losing such an expensive device.

Repeated calls, however, went unanswered. Fearing the worst, he used Google’s Find My Device service to remotely lock the smartphone. Hoping for official help, he also visited a nearby police station, where officers advised him to file a complaint online.

Living alone and without a spare phone, the situation felt even more overwhelming. Back home, he used his laptop to send an email to his girlfriend, asking her to keep trying his number. Hours passed with uncertainty hanging over him. Then, at around 10:30 pm, came a turning point — someone finally answered the call.

By 11 pm, he managed to speak with the person who had found the phone, using his building guard’s phone to connect. The man on the other end explained that he had discovered the device lying on the road. Since it was already late, they decided to meet the following morning.

True to his word, the stranger arrived the next day and handed over the phone intact. He refused any reward for his honesty.

During their brief conversation, the man simply said, “Din ka 1000 kamata hoon, khush rehta hoon. Achha kaam karna chahiye.” (I earn Rs 1,000 a day and I stay happy. One should do good deeds.)

While the Samsung S25 carried a hefty price tag, the emotional distress of losing it had weighed far heavier. What began as a night filled with worry ended as a reminder that decency still exists. Sometimes, even in the middle of a busy city street, kindness quietly finds its way back to you.
