Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar shared insights into his famous 241-run knock in Sydney (2003-04) and his connection to Pune at an event celebrating 75 years of Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale on Sunday.

Tendulkar revealed how he consciously avoided the cover drive during that innings after discussing it with his brother Ajit Tendulkar. “Ajit told me the problem wasn’t the shot but my shot selection. In Sydney, it wasn’t pre-planned that I wouldn’t play the cover drive. Ajit challenged me to play without getting out, and I took it. While leaving deliveries outside off, I decided to avoid the cover drive as it was getting me in trouble,” he said.

Talking about Pune, Tendulkar said, “My sister lives here after marriage. So, I believe I am also a Punekar,” drawing loud applause from the audience.

He also spoke about the importance of a strong support system, comparing his career to a Formula 1 car that needs a dedicated team. “For me, my team included my family, coaches, teammates, the groundsman, and fans who watched me play,” he said.

The event featured performances by poet Vaibhav Joshi, singer Anand Bhate, and Bansuri player Amar Oak. A tribute to the late Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain marked a solemn moment. Vaibhav Joshi recited a mixed Marathi-Hindustani poem in his memory.

The celebration blended cricket, music, and nostalgia, making it a memorable evening for Pune’s audience.
