In a bid to alleviate the mounting pressure on Sassoon General Hospital, the Pune Police has decided to redirect forensic cases from Wanwadi and Hadapsar police stations to the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC). This move aims to reduce the hospital’s workload, which has been struggling to cope with the high number of patients.

Sassoon General Hospital, a major healthcare hub in the region, had been shouldering the additional burden of forensic cases from across the city. Concerns were raised about the hospital’s overflowing patient capacity and delays in receiving forensic reports, prompting the police to take action. Additional Commissioner of Police Shailesh Balakawade issued a letter outlining the new arrangement.

According to the letter, AFMC will now handle all forensic cases within the limits of Wanwadi and Hadapsar police stations. This includes procedures such as forensic autopsy, age determination, injury reports, and competency testing. The state government’s home department has also backed the decision, recognizing the need to distribute forensic cases among other hospitals.

Dr. Eknath Pawar, Dean of Sassoon General Hospital, welcomed the move,  he told media that, “The number of patients in Sassoon Hospital is more than capacity. Among them, the burden of forensic cases is also on Sassoon. Steps are now being taken to reduce it.” The redirection of forensic cases to AFMC is part of a larger plan to allocate responsibilities to other hospitals, including District Hospital in Aundh and Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCM) in Pimpri-Chinchwad.

This development brings much-needed relief to Sassoon General Hospital, which has been operating under immense pressure. By sharing the workload with other medical institutions, the hospital can now focus on providing quality healthcare services to its patients. With this new arrangement in place, Pune’s healthcare and law enforcement agencies are working together to ensure a more efficient and effective system for handling forensic cases.
