Savitribai Phule University (SPPU), based in Pune, has announced a strategic plan to increase the number of main pages on answer sheets from 24 to 36. This decision stems from a comprehensive scientific study aimed at improving the examination process for students.

The initiative seeks to address the need for ample writing space during exams, thus mitigating any issues arising from a shortage of supplementary sheets. A political economics student at SPPU, highlighted the psychological burden imposed by the necessity for additional supplements, stating, “Extra supplements also build pressure on the mind about how much is written in the exam.”

Moreover, the university aims to reduce its overall consumption of answer sheets, estimated at 1 crore, thereby curbing production costs and promoting a more environmentally friendly approach. Recognizing that students often resort to drawing extra margins on answer sheets, the Board Of Examination and Evaluation emphasizes the importance of conserving paper and space by eliminating such practices.

Several factors contributed to the decision to implement this change. These include concerns about potential malpractices due to unnumbered sheets, which can result in fines and inquiries, as well as colleges’ use of extra supplements for internal administrative purposes during semester exams.

Mahesh Kakade, Director of Board Of Examinations and Evaluation Powers at SPPU, explained, “The committee conducted a thorough analysis of students’ writing speed, considering factors such as the number of words written per minute, typically ranging between 15-20. The new system, featuring a 36-page main answer sheet, has been designed to accommodate both two and three-hour papers effectively.”
