In response to increasing natural and manmade disasters, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has announced plans to introduce disaster management courses in all its affiliated colleges. This initiative follows a call from the Yuva Sena urging the university to address the critical need for disaster preparedness education.

Professor Suresh Gosavi, the Vice-Chancellor of SPPU, emphasized the necessity of such courses, noting the rising incidences of crises where disaster management skills are crucial. The university administration has endorsed the proposal presented by Kalpesh Yadav, joint secretary of the Yuva Sena, to develop a comprehensive syllabus in collaboration with field experts.

Highlighting the broader significance of this decision, officials pointed out the scarcity of private institutes offering disaster management programs in Maharashtra. By launching these courses, SPPU aims to become the first state university in Maharashtra to provide specialized education in this field.

The move aligns with the implementation of the new education policy, which encourages the introduction of skill-oriented courses. Students are expected to benefit significantly from the employment opportunities available in disaster management, both within and outside the state.

The curriculum will be designed to cover various aspects of disaster management, preparing students to contribute effectively in crisis situations.

The initiative marks a proactive step by SPPU to address the growing demand for disaster management professionals and is set to broaden educational offerings under the university’s ambit.
