The city’s maximum temperatures remained well above normal on Tuesday, with Chandrapur in the Vidarbha region recording the highest temperature in the country at a searing 45.6°C. This came close to the location’s all-time April record of 46.4°C, which was set on April 30, 1996, a benchmark that has stood since temperature recordings began in 1892.

In Pune, Lohegaon and Shivajinagar recorded maximum temperatures of 42°C and 39.9°C, respectively. The temperature in Shivajinagar was 1.7°C above the normal level. According to a local forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), day temperatures in most parts of Pune city are likely to remain between 40°C and 42°C until April 27.

Other regions of Maharashtra were also gripped by intense heat. Solapur in Madhya Maharashtra recorded 43°C. An IMD official explained that hot air advection from northwestern India toward Maharashtra is responsible for the elevated temperatures. Such advection patterns tend to intensify during the pre-monsoon months. Even coastal areas like Mumbai saw little relief, recording 33.4°C.

Vidarbha continued to be among the hottest regions in India. Brahmapuri recorded 45°C, Amravati 44.6°C, Akola 44.1°C, and Nagpur 43.6°C. The rising temperatures in Vidarbha are primarily attributed to anticyclonic circulation in the lower and middle levels of the troposphere.

Elsewhere in India, several regions faced extreme heat, though none matched Chandrapur’s intensity. Jharsuguda in Odisha recorded 45.4°C, while Sidhi in Madhya Pradesh reached 44.5°C. Other hot locations included Adilabad in Telangana (43.8°C), Raipur in Chhattisgarh (43.7°C), and Satna in Madhya Pradesh (43.6°C).

According to IMD forecasts, heatwave conditions are likely to persist in isolated pockets across several states. Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh are expected to experience these conditions until April 25. East Rajasthan will continue to see heatwaves until April 26. Heatwave alerts are also in place for Haryana and Odisha from April 22 to 25, and for Uttar Pradesh from April 22 to 26.

Punjab, Gangetic West Bengal, and west Rajasthan are under heatwave watch from April 23 to 26. Bihar and Jharkhand are expected to face heatwave conditions from April 25 to 26. Additionally, the IMD has warned of warm night conditions in isolated pockets of Bihar during April 23 to 26.

Adding to the discomfort, hot and humid weather is expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema from April 22 to 25. Marathwada will experience similar conditions from April 21 to 24. Bihar and Jharkhand will face high humidity from April 22 to 24. Hot and humid conditions are also forecast for Konkan and Goa (April 22-23), Madhya Maharashtra (April 24-25), and Gujarat (April 22-24).

An IMD official noted that maximum temperatures are currently in the range of 42°C to 45°C across Vidarbha, Marathwada, north Telangana, north and central Chhattisgarh, interior Odisha, northwest Jharkhand, southwest Bihar, east and northwest Madhya Pradesh, southeast Uttar Pradesh, and south Haryana. These temperatures are 2°C to 4°C above normal in many of these areas.
