Security Breach in Parliament: 14 MPs suspended; action against 8 police officials
On Wednesday, an incident of jumping into the hall from the audience gallery of the Lok Sabha took place, breaching the security of the Parliament. Then on Thursday, the opposition raised a ruckus demanding a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah on the security arrangements of the Parliament. In this case, 14 Lok Sabha MPs were suspended.
Meanwhile, eight security personnel were suspended for breaching Parliament’s security, while the infiltrating youths were booked under the Anti-Terrorism Act (UAPA). Four of them were remanded in police custody for seven days.
The opposition raised their voices in both the Houses over the intrusion of the two youths. There was a ruckus in both the Houses demanding that Home Minister Amit Shah should give an answer in the Parliament that there has been such a big mess in security. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi proposed the suspension of 14 MPs from the Lok Sabha for obstructing session, which was approved by a voice vote, suspending them for the remainder of the session.
Prahlad Joshi said that when the proceedings of the House were shifted to the new Parliament building, the Speaker had proposed in the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting that the members should take a fresh resolution not to display placards in the House. This proposal was unanimously approved. No one opposed him. 14 MPs violated the decision taken in the BAC meeting and brought placards in the House, hence they were suspended.
DMK MP S. R. Parthiban’s name was also in the list of suspended MPs; But when it was realized that his name was mistakenly included in the list even though he was not in the House, it was decided to withdraw his suspension.
8 personnel of Delhi Police have been suspended for breaching the security of Parliament. The suspended police personnel were on deputation for Parliament security and tasked with screening visitors and the media.
Delhi Police is deployed to prevent those entering the Parliament premises as well as the building. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is responsible for the security there.
The four arrested in connection with the breach of security in Parliament have been charged under sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code.
