SHe-Box Portal Upgrade: Women Can Now Report Road, Online Harassment Directly To Police
Government links portal with 17,000 police stations to ensure faster action and improved safety
In a major step towards strengthening women’s safety, the central government is upgrading the SHe-Box portal to allow women to report not just workplace harassment, but also incidents occurring in public places and during daily travel.
The revamped system will be directly linked to around 17,000 police stations across the country, enabling quicker response and real-time action.
What Is SHe-Box Portal
The SHe-Box (Sexual Harassment Electronic Box) portal was launched to help women report workplace harassment under the POSH Act, 2013. It allowed women in both government and private sectors to file complaints online, often without revealing their identity.
Until now, complaints were handled internally by organisations through designated committees.
What Has Changed Now
With the latest upgrade, the scope of the portal is being expanded beyond workplaces.
Women will now be able to report harassment faced:
- On the way to work or college
- At bus stops, railway stations, or markets
- Inside public transport like buses or trains
- In any public place
This marks a significant shift, bringing everyday safety concerns under a formal complaint system.
Direct Link With Police Stations
One of the biggest changes is the integration of the portal with police systems.
Once a complaint is filed, it will be automatically forwarded to the nearest police station based on the location of the incident. This ensures faster intervention and reduces the need for victims to physically visit police stations.
Police will also increase patrolling in areas flagged through complaints.
How To File A Complaint
The process has been kept simple:
- Visit the official SHe-Box portal
- Enter basic details such as name and address
- Provide the location of the incident
- Describe what happened
Once submitted, the complaint will directly reach the concerned police station for action.
App Version In Development
To make the system more accessible, an app version of the SHe-Box portal is also being developed. This is expected to further simplify complaint registration and improve response time.
Why This Matters
Many women hesitate to approach police stations directly, especially in cases of harassment in public spaces. This upgrade aims to bridge that gap by offering a safer, more accessible reporting mechanism.
By combining digital reporting with on-ground policing, authorities hope to ensure quicker action and better protection for women.
