PMC proposes Rs 61 crore project to ease congestion near Sancheti Chowk and Agriculture College stretch
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed a new flyover connecting Sakhar Sankul in Shivajinagar to the Old Mumbai–Pune Road, aiming to tackle persistent traffic congestion in one of the city’s busiest corridors.
Daily Traffic Woes Prompt Action
The stretch between Agriculture College and Sancheti Hospital witnesses heavy traffic congestion daily, affecting office-goers, students, and even patients travelling to nearby hospitals. The area has long remained a bottleneck, leading to delays and chaotic traffic movement.
To address this, PMC has planned a flyover that will bypass these congested points and provide smoother connectivity.
Key Project Details
The proposed flyover will connect Sakhar Sankul directly to the Old Mumbai–Pune Highway, improving access between major routes in the city. The project has already received budgetary approval, with an estimated cost of Rs 61 crore.
The plan has been prepared by PMC’s Special Projects Department and is expected to significantly reduce travel time across the Shivajinagar belt.
‘Y’-Shaped Design For Better Connectivity
Officials have proposed a ‘Y’-shaped flyover, designed to improve traffic distribution.
One arm will descend towards the Mumbai-bound side of the Old Mumbai–Pune Highway, while the second arm will connect towards the College of Engineering Pune (COEP) side. The flyover will also pass over the railway line, eliminating dependency on the existing underpass.
This design will allow smoother movement for vehicles coming from multiple directions.
Improved Connectivity Across Key Routes
Once completed, the flyover will offer direct connectivity for commuters travelling from Ganeshkhind Road and Fergusson College Road. It will also improve access between Shivajinagar ST Bus Stand, the railway station, and the Old Mumbai–Pune Highway.
The project is expected to integrate with the underpass at Narveer Tanajiwadi, creating a more seamless traffic flow system across the area.
Who Will Benefit
The flyover is expected to benefit daily commuters travelling towards Mumbai, Nashik, and Pimpri-Chinchwad, along with students, office-goers, and patients visiting nearby hospitals.
By reducing congestion at key junctions, the project aims to cut travel time and improve overall traffic efficiency.
Addressing Long-Standing Infrastructure Gaps
The existing Wakdewadi underpass is narrow and often leads to traffic pile-ups. Heavy vehicles are forced to take longer routes, further increasing congestion in surrounding areas.
The new flyover is expected to resolve these long-standing issues by providing a faster and more reliable alternative route.
What Happens Next
With budget approval in place, the project is expected to move towards execution after necessary clearances and detailed planning. Civic officials believe the flyover will play a crucial role in easing congestion in one of Pune’s most critical traffic zones.
