Shocking ! Sugar levels high among Mumbaikars ; reveals study

Pune: In a shocking revelation, about 18 percent of people aged 18 to 69 years in Mumbai had fasting blood sugar levels of more than 126 milligrams. The percentage of pre-diabetic people is 15.6 per cent. Blood sugar levels were found to be 110 mg and 126 mg.

These shocking statistics have been revealed in the steps survey conducted jointly by the World Health Organization and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

As per information, in a joint survey conducted by the BMC, both high blood pressure and diabetes were found in 8.3 per cent of the individuals. Obese and sedentary people are at higher risk of type 2 diabetes and it usually affects people 35 years or older, the survey said.

Number of overweight citizens :

A STEPS survey in Mumbai revealed that around 46 per cent of citizens are overweight. According to the World Health Organization classification, 12 percent of Mumbaikars were found to be obese. Obesity was more common in women.

BMC appeal :

Iqbal Singh Chahal, BMC Commissioner and administrator has appealed to Mumbaikars to contact the municipal hospitals to get treatment for diabetes and high blood pressure. He has also appealed to the citizens to adopt appropriate lifestyle changes and in this regard, they should take advantage of various services through the Public Health Department.
