To clear this doubt, Dr. Kirti Kulkarni, a well-known wellness expert, recently shared her perspective on Instagram. According to her, mangoes should be avoided during the monsoon season, and she explains why.

Firstly, Dr. Kulkarni highlights that the peel of mangoes becomes prone to mold and bacterial contamination during the rainy season due to exposure to rainwater and moisture. Even if the mango looks clean or is washed thoroughly, invisible mold spores and bacteria can remain on the surface and contaminate the fruit. This increases the risk of infection.

Secondly, the high humidity during monsoon triggers fermentation in the mango’s pulp, which is naturally rich in fructose (fruit sugar). Even if the mango looks fine from the outside, the inside might have begun fermenting. Consuming such fruit can lead to digestive issues such as bloating, acidity, or upset stomach.

Thirdly, Dr. Kirti cautions that mango sap can be particularly irritating for children, especially during seasonal changes when immunity is compromised. Children may show allergic reactions to the sap or suffer from skin or digestive discomfort after eating mangoes in this season.

So, while mangoes are highly beneficial and refreshing during summer, they may turn harmful if consumed in the monsoon. It’s best to stay cautious.

What Other Foods Should You Avoid During Monsoon?
In general, foods prone to spoilage, fermentation, or microbial contamination should be avoided during the rainy season. These include:
