Sleeper Vande Bharat Faces Cleanliness Concerns as Passenger Behaviour Sparks Debate
Grand expectations surrounded the launch of India’s first Sleeper Vande Bharat train, a project symbolising modern rail travel and improved passenger comfort. However, within days of its inauguration, troubling visuals began circulating online, shifting attention away from innovation and toward an ongoing issue—lack of civic sense among some travelers.
The Sleeper Vande Bharat train was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking another milestone for Indian Railways. Designed as a premium long-distance service with enhanced facilities, the train was meant to set new standards in comfort, speed, and cleanliness. Yet, railway officials’ earlier concerns appear to have materialised sooner than expected.
Even before the train was officially launched, a railway official had posted a cautionary message on social media platform X. The message urged passengers to travel on the Sleeper Vande Bharat only if they respected public property, followed washroom instructions, and practiced basic hygiene. Soon after the train began operations, videos surfaced showing passengers throwing garbage such as tea cups, wrappers, and papers directly on their seats instead of using dustbins.
Unhygienic conditions are unfortunately not new to Indian Railways. Across various trains—whether Rajdhani, Shatabdi, or regular mail and express services—littered compartments, stained berths, and dirty toilets are common complaints. Despite being positioned as a premium and modern service, the Sleeper Vande Bharat has not been immune to these long-standing habits.
Indian Railways has made visible efforts to maintain cleanliness in the Sleeper Vande Bharat. Dustbins have been placed at several points inside the coaches, and strict housekeeping protocols are followed. Still, careless behaviour by a section of passengers has undermined these efforts, highlighting that infrastructure upgrades alone cannot solve the problem without public cooperation.

Social Media Reacts Strongly
The viral videos triggered widespread anger on social media, with users calling out the irresponsible behaviour of passengers who treated the train carelessly. Many expressed disappointment that a flagship train, meant to represent progress and discipline, was being reduced to the same conditions seen elsewhere due to negligence.
Responding to the criticism, railway officials reiterated that trains are public assets and maintaining their cleanliness is a shared responsibility. A senior railway officer stated that on-board housekeeping staff are always available to address cleanliness issues immediately. However, such services should not be seen as a substitute for basic civic responsibility.
As reactions continued to pour in, several social media users pointed out a deeper issue. Some remarked that India does not need external threats to damage its systems, as indiscipline and disregard for public property are enough to do that internally.
