Software Professional’s ₹20,000 Redesign Offer Confounds Scammer
Gurgaon-based engineer’s witty response to a scammer goes viral on X.
A software engineer from Gurgaon recently shared a humorous exchange with a scammer on X (formerly Twitter). The scammer, pretending to be an HDFC Bank representative, claimed that the engineer’s account had been deactivated and asked him to update his PAN (Permanent Account Number) by clicking a link in an SMS.
Recognizing the scam, Sharan, a senior cybersecurity analyst, decided to have some fun. When asked to click the link and update his PAN, Sharan highlighted the obvious flaws in the scam. He then offered to “redesign” the fake website to resemble HDFC’s real net banking site, suggesting a fee of ₹20,000 for his services.
The scammer, intrigued by Sharan’s proposal, asked for a sample via SMS. Sharan shared a screenshot of the conversation on X with the caption: “Lesson: Never mess with a developer.” The post has already been viewed nearly 24,000 times.
Netizens reacted with a mix of curiosity and humor.
Some suggested accepting the Rs 20,000 from the scammer as a way to “scam the scammer” in return.
Comments included questions about why the phone number was censored, playful inquiries about the Rs 20,000 offer, and requests for more details on how the interaction unfolded.
