Solapur: Flight Services Take Off Delayed Until December

The highly anticipated flight services from Solapur have hit a roadblock, with the formal launch delayed until December. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to inaugurate the Solapur Air Service was canceled due to heavy rains in Pune, pushing back the launch.

The Solapur air service was first approved by the central government in June 2016 under the Udan Yojana. However, the city’s airport lacked necessary facilities, hindering progress. Recently, the Solapur Municipal Corporation removed a 92-meter high chimney obstructing the airport, paving the way for aviation services.

District Collector Kumar Ashirwad’s relentless efforts led to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of India granting permission for civil aviation from Solapur Airport. Initially, flights will connect Solapur to Mumbai, with plans to expand services to Hyderabad and Tirupati.

Due to the airport’s relatively short runway, only 40 and 72 seat capacity aircraft will operate. Three companies have submitted proposals, which are currently under review. The finalization process is expected to take until November or December.

Residents of Solapur will have to wait a couple of months before enjoying the convenience of flight services. Once operational, the flights will boost connectivity, commerce, and tourism in the region.

The delayed launch may disappoint residents, but the upcoming flight services promise to transform Solapur’s aviation landscape. Stay tuned for updates on flight schedules and bookings.
