Specially abled son of a constable helps Mumbai police solve murder case
In a remarkable turn of events, the Mumbai Police successfully advanced a murder investigation at Dadar railway station thanks to the unique assistance of a constable’s speech and hearing-impaired son. The case began when the body of 30-year-old Arshad Ali Sadique Ali Shaikh was discovered stuffed in a trolley bag at the station on August 5. The investigation hit a significant roadblock as the prime suspect, Jay Chawda, is also speech and hearing impaired, making traditional interrogation methods ineffective.
The police needed someone proficient in sign language to communicate with the accused. “We were seeking the address of Sadhna Vidyalaya, a school for speech and hearing-impaired children. We needed someone to talk to the accused using sign language as part of the probe,” a police official told PTI.
During their search, the police encountered officers from the RAK Marg police station, including Constable Rajesh Satpute, who was patrolling Wadala. Satpute informed his colleagues that his 23-year-old son Gaurav, also speech and hearing impaired, had attended Sadhna Vidyalaya in Dadar. Upon learning this, the railway police team visited Satpute’s home at 2 a.m. and brought Gaurav to the Dadar railway police station.
Gaurav was given a questionnaire and asked to use his sign language skills to communicate with Chawda, who had been detained at the station with the trolley bag. Through Gaurav’s interpretation, the police gained crucial insights into the crime, including details about the co-accused and the motive behind the murder.
Further investigations revealed that three individuals, including the victim’s wife, who is allegedly involved in an extramarital relationship with Chawda, were implicated in the crime. Constable Rajesh Satpute expressed immense pride in his son’s contribution to the case. “It was Gaurav’s efforts that enabled the police to understand the entire chain of events,” Satpute told PTI.
