Karnataka: India has reported 602 coronavirus cases of the JN.1 variant. Amid the ongoing coronavirus situation, Karnataka witnesses a rise in JN.1 variant cases, reaching a tally of 511, marking the highest number of infections in the state.

The country recorded five deaths and 602 new cases of COVID-19 between Tuesday and Wednesday, stated the Union Health Ministry. The number of active cases stood at 4,440.

The JN.1 variant has been identified in 11 states and Union Territories as of Tuesday. Karnataka leads with the highest cases at 199, followed by Kerala with 148 cases. Goa, Gujarat, and Maharashtra report 47, 36, and 32 cases, respectively. Tamil Nadu has 26 cases, Delhi 15, and Rajasthan 4. Telangana reports two cases, while Odisha and Haryana each report one.

The World Health Organization designates JN.1 as a ‘variant of interest’, noting a perceived low risk to public health based on available evidence. However, with winter in the northern hemisphere, there’s concern that the variant, alongside other infections, could contribute to increased respiratory infections globally.
