The state election commission has begun preparing for the municipal elections. As per reports, Maharashtra State Election Commission has asked the municipal corporations to present the ward structure by January 6, 2022 by including the details such as population count for the reservation of the ward and its geographical jurisdiction. The state election commission on November 3, 2021 had asked to prepare a rough draft on the basis of three member panel. As per this, the municipal corporations had prepared a ward structure which was shared with the state election commission on December 6, 2021, which was presented to the commission on December 11, 2021. The commission had suggested some changes in this structure. The state government on December 15, 2021 had shared the details as per the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act 2021 (multi panel basis (three member panel) allotment of reservation and rescheduling of the seats) under section 7 shall be distributed among the SC female, ST Female, OBC female and General Female.

But, following the Supreme Court’s decision, till the State government does not appoint a three level scrutiny committee and fixes the OBC reservation till then, the general elections, by polls shall be held by allotting these OBC reservation as general category and hold the elections. According to this there won’t be any seats available for OBC category. Considering this, in all the prabhags {Wards} tickets should be allotted to general category women and a notification regarding the same must be issued.

The state election commission has issued revised orders stating the ward structure and reservation of seats. According to this notification, the draft panel for the elections must be submitted by January 6, 2022 by the deputy commissioner (election) personally, informing the state commission. Realizing the need for restructuring of the ward, a new revised order was issued on December 28, 2021.
