State waits for Covishield vaccines, while Poonawalla says enough stock available

While the state has 17 lakh Covaxin doses, Covishield doses are not available, said sources.

The coronavirus is back in the news, amidst reports of a new variant BF 7 spreading in some countries. The Central government appealed to states to step up vaccination coverage and surveillance to handle the situation better. The Maharashtra government has demanded 10 lakh doses of the vaccines. While the state has 17 lakh Covaxin doses, Covishield doses are not available, said sources.

“We don’t have enough stock of Covishield. We are waiting for the supply from the central government,” said Dr Suryakan Devkate, vaccination head, PMC

Addressing the issue, Adar Poonawalla, CEO, Serum Institute of India said, “At present, we have about 20 million doses of Covishield ready with us. Our monthly production capacity is 100 million doses for each vaccine – Covishield and Covovax.

We can increase or decrease it as per production requirements. We also have enough raw material with us to meet the demand.”
