Street Food Stalls In Pune Under Scanner; Government Plans Tough Law Against Food Adulteration
Pune, March 13, 2026: Street-side Chinese or other food stalls operating across the city are now under the scrutiny of the administration following rising concerns about food quality and safety. Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Minister Narhari Zirwal has ordered immediate inspections of such food carts and strict action against violators.
The announcement was made in the state assembly after MLA Sunil Kamble raised concerns about the poor quality of food being served at several establishments in Pune.
396 Hotels Issued Notices
According to inspection data shared by the government, the Food and Drug Administration Maharashtra conducted checks at 664 food establishments in Pune between April 2025 and January 2026. Authorities found serious irregularities in many cases, leading to improvement notices being issued to 396 hotels.
During the crackdown, penalties amounting to ₹75,34,400 lakh were imposed. Additionally, the licenses of three major establishments were suspended after they failed to rectify the violations.
Action Against Popular Eateries
Food safety concerns have also surfaced at well-known establishments. In July 2025, the license of the iconic Cafe Goodluck was suspended for 12 days after a piece of glass was reportedly found in its popular bun maska.
Similarly, action was taken against Bhiwandi Darbar in the Camp area after defects were detected in a chicken soup sample.
During the discussion, legislators also expressed concern over adulteration in paneer and dairy products, warning that such practices could contribute to serious health risks, including diseases like cancer.

Government Plans Stricter Law
To curb food adulteration, the state government is preparing to introduce a stricter law against offenders. The draft legislation has been sent to the Law and Judiciary Department for final approval.
Minister Narhari Zirwal also informed the assembly that laboratories in Pune and Nashik will be operated at full capacity. To address manpower shortages, the government has recruited 197 new officers for enforcement and inspections.
