Uneven pleats, cracked dough, or modaks breaking apart are common problems, especially for beginners.

The good news? You don’t need expensive moulds or professional skills to make beautiful modaks. With a little patience and a few smart kitchen tricks, you can easily shape elegant pleats using everyday tools available at home. Here are some simple yet effective methods that will make modak preparation stress-free and enjoyable.

1. The Toothpick Method: Neat Pleats Made Easy

If shaping pleats with your fingers feels difficult, a toothpick can be your best helper.

Start by preparing a small dough disc and placing the coconut-jaggery filling in the center. Gently bring the edges together and shape it into a cone. Once the modak is sealed, take a clean toothpick and lightly draw straight lines from the base upwards. This technique helps create evenly spaced pleats, giving your modak a clean, mould-like finish.

2. Fork Technique: A Stylish and Simple Alternative

A fork, commonly found in every kitchen, can also help you shape modaks beautifully.

After filling and closing the dough into a round or slightly conical shape, use the back of a spoon or a fork to press vertical lines at equal gaps around the modak.
